A judge today sentenced 43-year-old former Navy JAG officer Nicholas Kassotis to life in prison without the possibility of parole, following his conviction on all 12 charges related to the murder and dismemberment of his wife, Mindi Mebane Kassotis. The sentence was delivered immediately after a unanimous guilty verdict.
The courtroom was tense as the verdict was read. Kassotis blinked slowly while others broke into tears. State prosecutors urged the judge to ensure he never sees freedom again; the defense pleaded for rehabilitation and the possibility of parole. But the judge echoed the state’s position, stating that the crime revealed “a level of depravity that truly shocks the conscious.”
Nicholas Kassotis had been convicted on counts including both malice murder and felony murder, plus aggravated assault, concealing a death, possession of a weapon and other tools used in the crime, removal of body parts, and tampering with evidence, all counts ending in guilty verdicts
