Two-year-old Ethan Ives-Griffiths weighed just 22 pounds at the time of his death. He had over 40 visible injuries, a swollen brain, internal bleeding, and signs of prolonged malnutrition.

The courtroom at Mold Crown Court fell silent as prosecutors described the toddler’s final days—marked by vomiting, visible weakness, and repeated falls. CCTV footage showed Ethan flopping on a trampoline, struggling to stand as older children bounced around him. Not one adult intervened.
According to the prosecution, Ethan was subjected to “casual brutality” in the Garden City home where he lived with his mother and grandparents. Prosecuting KC Caroline Rees told the jury Ethan was treated as an object of ridicule and abuse. Other children were allegedly encouraged to mistreat him as a form of play.
On August 14, 2021, Ethan collapsed after what the prosecution describes as a forceful attack. Only Michael and Kerry Ives were with him at the time. Paramedics arriving at the scene described Ethan as emaciated, with a sunken chest and multiple bruises. A post-mortem confirmed he died of a head injury consistent with abusive trauma.
The delay in calling emergency services—nearly 20 minutes—further fueled suspicion. Instead of seeking help immediately, Kerry Ives hesitated. And when the truth came out, both grandparents pointed the finger at Shannon Ives.
But prosecutors say Shannon was far from innocent. Although she is not charged with murder, she faces charges of causing or allowing the death of a child, and child cruelty. The court heard she was upstairs on her phone as her son was assaulted. CCTV shows her on the trampoline with Ethan earlier that day, bouncing as he fell. Ms. Rees told jurors that Shannon had seen her parents shake Ethan in anger before and took no action.
One of the most chilling moments of the trial came when the jury was shown footage of Michael Ives allegedly encouraging a child to hit Ethan, and later, dragging the toddler by one arm. According to the prosecution, the trio entered into a “pact of silence,” choosing to blame each other instead of telling the truth.
The trial is ongoing and expected to continue through mid-June. Michael and Kerry Ives deny murder and all related charges. Shannon Ives also pleads not guilty. But as testimony builds, one thing is clear: Ethan Ives-Griffiths was failed by every adult in his life.
