Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, has been formally charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and bodily harm. Norwegian authorities confirmed the charges on June 28, 2025, following an extensive investigation involving multiple alleged victims.
According to Oslo police attorney Andreas Kruszewski, Høiby faces a total of nine charges: one count of rape involving sexual intercourse, two counts of rape without intercourse, four counts of sexual assault, and two counts of bodily injury. While the official indictment refers to several victims, Kruszewski clarified that the total number of alleged victims is in the double digits. Authorities have not released their identities, citing privacy laws and the sensitivity of the allegations.
The charges stem from reported incidents spanning several years. Investigators allege a pattern of coercive and violent sexual behavior, though specifics regarding dates, locations, and circumstances remain under seal pending court proceedings. Høiby, now 28 years old, is currently not in custody and remains free as the judicial process moves toward potential trial.
A spokesperson for the Royal House of Norway stated that the palace will not comment on the ongoing legal matter but expressed confidence in the judicial system. As of now, neither Crown Princess Mette-Marit nor Crown Prince Haakon has made a public statement.
Legal experts in Norway note that, if convicted, Høiby could face a multi-year prison sentence, depending on the severity of the offenses and the court’s findings. Under Norwegian law, rape charges involving aggravated circumstances, multiple victims, or bodily harm can result in penalties of up to 15 years in prison.
The case is expected to proceed to a preliminary hearing in the coming weeks. Prosecutors have indicated that additional charges could be filed if new evidence emerges. Defense counsel for Høiby has yet to make any official comment.
This case marks one of the most high-profile criminal proceedings involving a member of Norway’s royal family or their immediate relatives. It has prompted widespread public debate about transparency, privilege, and the limits of royal immunity in modern constitutional monarchies.
