A crucial court hearing is scheduled for Monday in the case of 13-year-old Madeline Soto, whose death in February shocked Florida and drew national attention. Stephan Sterns, her mother’s boyfriend and the man charged with her murder, could enter a plea deal during the session, potentially avoiding trial.
The hearing, which will take place in Orange County court, was set following weeks of closed-door negotiations between prosecutors and defense attorneys. Legal analysts suggest Monday could be the moment Sterns either agrees to plead guilty or signals intent to take his case to trial. No official confirmation has been given about the presence of a finalized plea deal.
Sterns faces charges including first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse, after Madeline’s body was discovered in a field days after she was reported missing. Surveillance footage, forensic evidence from a hotel room, and conflicting timelines from Sterns formed the backbone of the state’s case. Prosecutors have not yet announced whether they will seek the death penalty, but under Florida law, first-degree murder involving a child victim is a capital crime.
If Sterns accepts a plea, it would likely include a detailed proffer — a factual statement outlining his role in Madeline’s death.
