OREM, Utah — September 11, 2025 — Investigators say they are closing in on the gunman who assassinated conservative commentator Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University, citing new evidence recovered in the past 24 hours.
Authorities confirmed they now have “good video” showing the suspected shooter in the moments before and after the fatal rooftop attack. A weapon believed to have been used in the killing has also been recovered, though investigators declined to specify whether it was a rifle.
In addition to video and the firearm, forensic teams recovered footwear impressions and a palm print near the suspected sniper’s position. These findings suggest the attacker left behind crucial physical evidence despite the careful vantage point chosen to carry out the shooting.
Law enforcement sources described the suspect as appearing to be around the age of college students and able to blend in easily with the crowd at Utah Valley University. The FBI and ATF, leading the investigation, have not released a name or image of the suspect, citing the ongoing manhunt.
Charlie Kirk, 31, founder of the conservative youth group Turning Point USA, was killed around noon on September 10 while addressing students under a large white tent. The gunman, positioned roughly 200 yards away on a rooftop, fired a single shot that struck Kirk in the head or neck.
The assassination has drawn national condemnation. President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, and Utah leaders have all decried the attack as an assault on free speech and political discourse.
Prosecutors are expected to pursue aggravated murder charges under Utah law, which could carry the death penalty. Federal prosecutors may also weigh terrorism enhancements once the suspect is identified and arrested.
The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone with additional video or eyewitness accounts to come forward.
