Vallejo, CA — The body of 28-year-old Renia Lewis was found inside a hidden attic compartment of a Vallejo home after she had been missing for more than a week. Police officers, acting on a search warrant, discovered her remains behind a false wall in a detached unit after neighbors reported a strong odor. The property was described by investigators as cluttered and difficult to navigate, with concealed areas built into the structure.
The man accused of killing her, 41-year-old Douglas Irwin Shaw, was arrested at his workplace later that same day without incident. Authorities say Shaw is being charged with murder under California Penal Code Section 187, which defines homicide as the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought. He remains in custody at the Solano County Jail pending arraignment.
Lewis had been missing since September 28 and her body was found on September 30.
Investigators have not released a motive, and they have found no confirmed prior relationship between Shaw and Lewis. Court records show Shaw was previously the subject of a restraining order obtained by an ex-girlfriend in 2023, suggesting a possible history of violent behavior. Forensic teams are analyzing evidence from the attic and surrounding property, including items used to seal the area where Lewis was found.
Family members of the victim told reporters they believe she suffered significant trauma before death, though authorities have not publicly confirmed details of the autopsy. In California, aggravating factors such as dismemberment or concealment of a body can influence sentencing if prosecutors pursue special-circumstance enhancements under Penal Code Section 190.2. The Solano County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case and could amend charges once forensic reports are complete.
For now, the official cause of death has not been disclosed. Police have emphasized that the investigation remains active and that more charges may follow as evidence is processed. The discovery of Lewis’s body ended days of uncertainty for her family, who had organized public searches across Vallejo and neighboring cities. What remains is the legal process, which will determine whether Douglas Shaw faces trial for one of the most disturbing homicides the Bay Area has seen this year.
