A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the death of 48-year-old Sunshine Stewart, whose body was discovered on July 3, 2025, on an island in Crawford Pond, Union, Maine. The Maine State Police confirmed the teen’s arrest on July 18, but did not release his name due to juvenile privacy laws. He is currently being held at the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.
The case has drawn statewide attention due to the brutal nature of the killing and the mystery surrounding Stewart’s final hours. She had gone missing the day before, on July 2, during a solo paddleboarding trip. Her body was located in the early hours of July 3 on an island accessible only by boat. According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Stewart died from strangulation and blunt force trauma.
At this stage, authorities have not disclosed whether the victim and suspect knew each other. The motive remains unclear. Investigators have not released details about any forensic or digital evidence that may have linked the suspect to the crime scene. Prosecutors are likely to seek a waiver to try the teen as an adult, particularly given the severity and nature of the offense. Under Maine law, the state may petition for a juvenile to be tried in Superior Court for Class A felonies such as murder, especially when the defendant is over 14.
The timeline of events suggests premeditation is still under review. If prosecutors find evidence of planning or if the killing occurred during another felony—such as attempted sexual assault—that could elevate the charges and potentially expose the defendant to life in prison if tried as an adult. However, without that waiver, even a conviction in juvenile court would carry significantly less punishment, typically involving placement until age 21.
Community members in Union have held vigils for Stewart, describing her as an outdoor enthusiast and kindhearted local resident. The case continues to develop as state investigators and prosecutors prepare for what could be a complex and emotionally charged legal process. Additional updates are expected following the suspect’s next juvenile court appearance.
